If any of you have been following the news lately, you’ve probably heard of the #FreeKesha campaign. I’m writing this post to educate everyone about this urgent situation, and to make a call to action so that we can help Kesha make music again.

Kesha is a pop star who was mostly popular from 2010-2013, and she has also written countless chart-toppers for some of the biggest names in music, including Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson. Kesha also writes the majority of her own material. Her most famous songs are “Tik Tok,” “We R Who We R,” “C’mon,” “Blow,” and a collaboration with Pitbull called “Timber.” Not only is Kesha a prolific singer-songwriter, she has spoken out for anti-bullying, LGBT issues, and animal rights. However, she is involved in a legal battle that could take away everything she’s worked for over the course of her lifetime.

In 2005, at age 18, Kesha was signed to producer Dr. Luke’s record label, Kemosabe Records, which is affiliated with Sony Music. On her 18th birthday, Dr. Luke forced her to drink and take drugs, and then raped her while she was under the influence. When Kesha realized what happened, Dr. Luke threatened to destroy her career if she told anyone about it. Over the past 10 years on Kemosabe, Kesha has been subject to physical and emotional abuse from Dr. Luke. According to BuzzFeed News, “Kesha also alleges Dr. Luke harassed her about her weight, calling her a ‘fat ******* refrigerator.’ Kesha later checked into a rehabilitation treatment facility for the treatment of bulimia, severe depression, post-traumatic stress and panic attacks, according to court documents.” In October 2014, Kesha sued Dr. Luke for drugging and raping her on her 18th birthday and causing her to suffer from bulimia because of his emotional abuse. Dr. Luke then sued Kesha, stating that she made up the entire story just to get out of her contract with Kemosabe. This past Friday, New York Supreme Court Judge Shirley Kornreich denied Kesha’s request to be free from working with her abuser. According to BuzzFeed News, “Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Shirley Werner Kornreich said releasing Kesha from the contract under Sony would cause irreparable harm since the ‘Tik Tok’ singer would no longer have to fulfill her contractual obligation to make six more albums with Dr. Luke for the record label.”

As if that weren’t enough, Dr. Luke has stifled Kesha’s creativity throughout her entire career, making her sing the same bubblegum-pop type of song song over and over and over again. Kesha has stated on many occasions that she wants to do more creative, meaningful songs, but that Dr. Luke refused to let her do so.

As a fellow creative female, I am calling every single person reading this to visit freekesha.com, read more about the case, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and sign the petition there. The goal of the petition is to get the CEO of Sony Music, Doug Morris, to terminate Kesha’s contract. Share the link to this post with everyone you know and on your social media. In the end, this case is not just about one pop star, it’s about the fair and ethical treatment of a human being. No one should ever be forced to work with their former abuser, and every artist deserves complete creative control over their work. The title says it all, guys. I haven’t posted in almost two months. Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’ve just been SUPER busy with school lately. I just finished my midterm exams last week, and I’m still recovering from them. Luckily, my studying paid off, and I scored in the A to B range for all of my exams. I’ve still got my eyes on those straight A’s! (In case you didn’t know, I’m a chronic perfectionist).

I thought I’d just write this post to update everyone on what’s been going on in my life. So far, this year has been the best year of my life. I go to a great school. It’s a lot bigger than my old school, which is nice because I have more opportunities to make new friends. The friends I have met this year are some of the closest friendships I’ve made in my life, and I know I’m going to be lifelong friends with a lot of people from school. The workload can be stressful at times, but, astonishingly, I’m able to get everything done in a timely manner.

I’m not saying that everything is sunshine and lollipops. There are always going to be mean teachers and popular cliques. I’ve found that I don’t have to let all that negativity affect me. All I have to do to be happy is sticking with my family and close friends. Sunshine is more powerful than storm clouds will ever be, and even in a storm, there’s always a rainbow afterwards. Some of the brightest stars shine in darkness.

Aside from writing, my other favorite activities are dance and yoga. I go to yoga class once a week (I had to miss it this week because of a snowstorm), and I dance at my school four days a week. I go to a studio once a week to do hip-hop dance. Hip-hop is probably my favorite style of dance because technique doesn’t matter a lot, it’s more about personality and really feeling and connecting with the music. That being said, I do more “traditional” styles of dance at school (ballet, tap, jazz), and I think that training has been important because every dancer needs to be knowledgeable about all styles of dance. I also started taking a painting class this past week, and we’ve been doing traditional Japanese brush painting as our first project. Visual art was one of my favorite classes in 8th grade, so I’m very excited to be doing more of it this semester in High School.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed this little insight into my life over the past few months. I can’t wait to see what the next few months will hold, and I am going to a lot of different classes and camps this coming summer, which I am also looking forward to. If you want to see more posts about my life, be sure to mention that in the comments below.
